History of Byland
Founded in 1134, Byland was brought within the the Cistercian family following the absorption of the Savigniac Congregation in 1147. By the late 1100s the Abbeys of Byland, Rievaulx & Fountains were described as 'the 3 shining lights of the North'.
Today you can see the remains of one of the largest cloisters in England, you can also see where excavation has recovered 13th century floor tiles in the church as well as the only stone lectern base in England. Byland's altar is now at Ampleforth Abbey.
The Inn was built in 1845 as a farm building using stone 'borrowed' from the ruined Byland Abbey and became a hostelry at the turn of the last century.
